Begin knitting from the bottom to top.
Cast on 132 sts or any other number of sts.

Bottom border
1st row – sl.st.1, k to end
2 -8 rows = 1st row

Body
9th row – sl.st.1, k5, p to last 6 sts; k6
10th row – sl.st.1, k to end
Alternate the rows 9 and 10 until you knit to underarms.

Sleeves
Cast on 30 sts or as many sts as necessary.
1st row – sl.st.1, k to end
2 – 8 rows = 1st row
9th row – sl.st.1, k to end
10th row – sl.st.1, p to end
11 and 13 rows = 9th row
12 and 14 rows = 10th row
15th row – sl.st.1, k2, inc.1, k to last 3 sts; inc1, k3
Repeat the pattern starting from the row 10 until you knit the desired length of each sleeve.
My sleeves are about 12 inches long.

Join sleeves into the body
1st row – sl.st.1, k5 (border sts), k front part sts, k sleeve sts, k back part sts, k sleeve sts, k front part sts, k6 (border sts)
2nd row - sl.st.1, k5, p to last 6 sts; k6
3rd row – sl.st.1, k to end
Alternate the 2nd and 3rd rows for about 2 inches (5 cm).
Tip: if your knit tightly, you may use a double pointed needle to help knitting sleeve sts.
Use a smaller size knitting needles to adjust your gauge.

Button hole
11th row – sl.st.1, k2, cast off 2 sts, k to end
12th row - sl.st.1, k5, p to last 4 sts; k1, make 2 loops, k3
13, 15, 17, 19 rows - sl.st.1, k to end
14, 16, 18, 20 rows - sl.st.1, k5, p to last 6 sts; k6
Count all your sts between borders. I have 200 sts (120 initial sts + 80 sleeve sts). To decrease 10 sts every other row, it is necessary to have multiples of 18 sts plus 16 additional sts or (18 x 10) + 16 = 196 sts.

Decrease
21st row – sl.st.1, k to sleeve, k2tog, k sleeve sts, k2tog, k back part sts, k2tog, k sleeve sts, k2tog, k to end
22nd row - sl.st.1, k5, p to last 6 sts; k6

Button hole
23rd row - sl.st.1, k2, cast off 2 sts, [k16, k2tog] x 10, k to end
24th row = 12th row
25th row – sl.st.1, k5, [k15, k2tog] x 10, k to end
26th row- sl.st.1, k5, p to last 6 sts; k6
27th row – sl.st.1, k6, [k14, k2tog] x 10, k to end
28, 30, 32 rows = 26th row
29th row – sl.st.1, k6, [k13, k2tog] x 10, k to end
31st row – sl.st.1, k7, [k12, k2tog] x 10, k to end
33rd row – sl.st.1, k7, [k11, k2tog] x 10, k to end
34th row – sl.st.1, k to end

Button hole
35th row – sl.st.1, k2, cast off 2 sts, k3, [k10, k2tog] x 10, k to end
36th row - sl.st.1, k last 4 sts; k1, make 2 loops, k3
37th row – sl.st.1, k8, [k9, k2tog] x 10, k to end
38, 40 rows – sl.st.1, k to end
39th row - sl.st.1, k9, [k8, k2tog] x 10, k to end

Cast off all the sts.
Sew sleeve sides together.
Sew up buttons.
Secure yarn tails.

Hello Sana,

Hello Sana,
How are you ?
I would love to knit your cardigan.
My gauge is 8cm for 14 stitches
So I would do:
8st for border
37st for front
74st for back
38 for sleeves
So 224st between borders.
Would be ok to decrease 10st every other row? I struggling with the math in this case…..
Thank you very much for your answer,
Melanie
