Step-by-step crochet instructions
Step 1
Make a foundation chain of 49 chain stitches plus 3 returning chains (RC).
Step 2
Increase 1st row by 8 chains (the very first chain of those 8 will be the last chain of the 3(RC) from step 1)
1st row (wrong side) – insert the crochet hook into the 4th st. from your hook, dc1*, m1**, dc11, m1, dc1, m1, dc21, m1, dc1, m1, dc11, m1, dc1, m1, dc1 + 2RC
*dc – double crochet
**m – make one stitch to increase the number of stitches
Step 3
Increase 2nd row by 10 chains
2nd row (right side) – insert the hook into the 2nd st. from your hook, sc2***, m1, sc1, m1, sc13, m1, sc1, m1, sc23, m1, sc1, m1, sc13, m1, sc1, m1, sc1, sc2 (in the very last chain) plus 2 RC
***sc – single crochet
Step 4
3rd row - insert the hook into the 3rd st. from your hook, dc3, m1, dc1, m1, dc15, m1, dc1, m1, dc25, m1, dc1, m1, dc15, m1, dc1, m1, dc4 + 2RC

Step 6
Connect back and both front pieces together
20th row – sc to end of 1st front part, skip shoulder part, continue sc to end of back part, skip second shoulder part, work sc to end of the row + 1RC
Step 7
21st row – sc (backwards) to end +1RC
22nd row – sc to end + 1RC
Repeat the pattern for few rows.
Step 8
Decrease
30th row – sc to end
31st row sc (backwards) to end
Repeat the pattern for several rows until you reach the desired length of the top.
Step 9
Work sc to crochet edges including sleeve edges.
Cut the yarn and secure it.
Step 10
Crochet ties.
Make a foundation chain of about 30 chains plus 1RC.
Work slip stitch to end of the chain.

Hi, I'm still new at this but I managed to make the hat and scarf. Now I'd like to make the top but the 49 foundation stitches are too small for me... How many would I need to make for my size? I'm a size 16 (UK).

Please read my comment to Marilyn Kolako on the first page. Work about 22 increase rows or until the back and 2 front parts will be wide enough to your chest circumference accordingly (depending on your gauge). Happy crocheting!
