Long-sleeve lace sweater knitting pattern – fan stitch
Step-by-step knitting instructions
Knit the sweater from the bottom to top
Step 1
Cast on loosely 120 sts or any even number of sts (multiples of 2 sts), using 29” circular needles.
Step 2
Bottom ribbing
1st round – k to end
2 & 3 rounds = 1st round
4th round – [p1, k1] to end
5th round – [p1, sl.1] to end
Alternate the 4th and 5th rounds until you knit the desired length of the ribbing.
Step 3
Increase 10 sts to have 130 sts in total or multiples of 13 sts (one repeat)
15th round – [k12, yo] to end
After the round, you should have 130 sts or 10 repeats.
Step 4
Fan stitch
16th round – [k1, yo, k12, yo] to end
17, 19, & 21 rounds = 1st round
18th round – [k2, yo, k12, yo, k1] to end
20th round – [k3, yo, k12, yo, k2] to end
22nd round – [k4, (k2tog) x 6, k3] to end
23rd round – Kw2L* to end
*Kw2L – knit with 2 loops – insert a right needle into a stitch (as you would do to knit a stitch), but wrap the needle twice with the yarn in a counterclockwise direction, and pull it though the base st.
Work the 24th round like your 16th round, but make loops longer before knitting them.
24th round – [make the first loop longer and k1, yo, k12 (before knitting each st., make loops longer), yo] to end
Repeat the pattern starting from the 17th round until you knit the desired length under arms. I repeated the 8 rounds of the pattern 10 times, and then I knitted few rounds more to work the very last round as the 20th round (widest part of the pattern).
Step 5
Front and back parts
Use half of the total number of stitches for each front and back part or 5 repeats. To work rows, it is necessary to add 3 sts (2 sts from the left side of the garment and 1 st from the right side). Before working the 1st row, increase 2 sts (yo and k1) then turn your work to the wrong side.
1st row (wrong side) – sl.1, p to end and purl one extra st to increase 1st.
After the 1st row, you should have 98 sts or multiples of 19 sts plus 3 additional sts.
2nd row (right side) – sl.1, [k4, (k2tog) x 6, k3] to last 2 sts; k2
3rd row – sl.1, Pw2L* to last 1 st; p1
*Pw2L – purl with 2 loops – insert a right needle into a stitch (as you would do to purl a stitch), but wrap the needle twice with the yarn in a clockwise direction, and pull it though the base st.
4th row – sl.1, [k1 (make loop longer), yo, k12 (make loops longer), yo] to last 2 sts; k2
5 &7 rows – sl.1, p to end
6th row – sl.1, [k2, yo, k12, yo, k1] to last 2 sts; k2
8th row – sl.1, [k3, yo, k12, yo, k2] to last 2 sts; k2
9th row – sl.1, p to end
Repeat the pattern staring from the 2nd row until you knit about 26 rows. Work the very last row as your 2nd row to have multiples of 13 sts plus 3 additional sts.
Step 6
Ribbing (long rows)
27th row (wrong side) – sl.1, p to end
28th row (right side) – sl.1, [p1, k1] to last 1st; p1
29th row – sl.1, [place the yarn in front of your work and sl.1, k1] to last 1 st; k1
Alternate the 28th and 29th rows until you crochet about 12 long rows.
Step 7
Shoulder pieces (short rows)
Back shoulder pieces
Use 16 sts and continue alternating the 28th and 29th row until you knit about 8 short rows. Cast off all the 16 sts. Return to the 39th (long) row and bind off stitches to last 15 sts. Then use the remaining 16 sts and work 8 rows for the second back shoulder piece.
Front shoulder pieces
Work the front shoulder pieces as the back shoulder pieces, but knit 6 short rows instead of 8.
Step 8
Join front and back shoulder pieces together. You may sew them or use a crochet hook.
Step 9
Sleeves
Cast on loosely 30 sts or multiples of 2 sts, using a double pointed needles.
Knit the bottom ribbing (step 2).
Increase 9 sts to have 39 sts in total or multiples of 13 sts.
Work the fan stitch (step 4) until you knit the desired length of the sleeve, using 16” circular needles.
Finish knitting the sleeve with the 21st round (widest round of the pattern), and then join sleeves into the garment. You may cast all sts off and sew it up or use a crochet hook.
Step 10
Neck edge
Pick up stitches on the neck line and then cast them all off or use a crochet hook and work single crochet all the way around.

You mention the size as S/M, but do not mention the inches. I am sure i am larger than this, but not sure how much. Do hou have other sizes?

Hi fdjuhnke,
Hi fdjuhnke,
You may adjust this pattern to other sizes. It depends on your gauge/tension and size. The easiest way to adjust your gauge is to use a thicker yarn and larger size knitting needles. If that is not enough, you may add two or more repeats. It is better to add an even number of repeats, that way it will be easier to split stitches to back and front parts later on. If you write me your gauge and size, I could give you my suggested number of sts to start with. Happy knitting!

Hi nazanin,
Hi nazanin,
For the XL size, I would cast on about 250 sts (using your gauge), and then increase it to 260 sts or 13 x 20 = 260 sts. Happy knitting!

You may adjust your gauge by using a smaller size knitting needles or cast on 104 sts (8 x 13) and use a thicker yarn. Happy knitting!

Thanks Sana. By 8*13 did you
Thanks Sana. By 8*13 did you mean "Increase 8 to have 112 sts in total or multiples of 13 sts (one repeat)" in step 3 ?

Hi shilpakrishnan10,
Hi shilpakrishnan10,
I meant mult. of 13 sts or 8 x 13 = 104 sts. To work the increase, you may cast on several sts fewer like 100 sts or so, and then increase the total number of sts to have mult. of 13 sts to knit the fan stitch. Happy knitting!
