Crochet women’s dress - pineapple stitch
Step-by-step crochet instructions
This dress is crocheted from top to bottom.
Step 1
First front shoulder piece
Make a foundation chain of 33 chains or 26 chs plus 7 additional chs.
Step 2
Pineapple stitch pattern
[] – one repeat is in brackets
1st row – h6ch, [(sc1, ch3, sk1) x 2, sc1, ch2, sk4, Vst on 1ch, (sk3, Vst. on 1ch) x 2, ch2, sk4, (sc1, ch3, sk1) x 2], sc1 + RC4
2nd row – h7ch, [sc1, ch3, sk3, sc1, ch2, (Vst. into Vst., ch1) x 2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk5, (sc1, ch3, sk3) x 2], sc1 + RC4
3rd row – h7ch, [sc1, ch3, sk3, sc1, ch2, (Vst. into Vst., ch2) x 3, sk5, sc1, ch3, sk3], sc1 + RC4
4th row – h7ch, [sc1, ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, trc5 into Vst., ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk5, sc1, ch3, sk3], sc1 + RC4
5th row – h7ch, [sc1, ch2, Vst. into Vst, ch2, sk3, (dc2 on 1ch)x2, dc3 on 1ch, (dc2 on 1ch)x2, ch2, Vst. into Vst, ch2, sk5], sc1 + RC3
6th row – h4ch, [Vst. on 1ch, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk4, (sc1, ch3, sk1) x 4, sc1, ch2, Vst. into Vst., sk3], Vst. on 1ch, sk1, dc1 + RC3
7th row – [(Vst. into Vst., ch1) x 2, ch1, sk5, (sc1, ch3, sk3) x 3, sc1, ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch1], Vst. into Vst., dc1 + RC3
8th row – [(Vst. into Vst., ch2) x 2, sk5, (sc1, ch3, sk3) x 2, sc1, ch2, Vst. into Vst, ch2], Vst. into Vst., dc1 + RC3
9th row – [trc3 into Vst., ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk5, sc1, ch3, sk3, sc1, ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, trc2 into Vst.], dc1 + RC3
10th row (1st shoulder piece) – h4ch, (dc2 on 1ch) x 3, ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk5, sc1, ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk3, (dc2 on 1ch) x 3, ch51
Step 3
Estimate
Measure the front shoulder piece (one pineapple) and estimate how many pineapples you need according to your chest circumference.
Step 4
Second front shoulder piece
Repeat step 1 and 1st through 9th rows of the step 2 (do not work returning chs after the 9th row)
10th row (2nd shoulder piece) – (dc2 on 1ch) x 3, ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk5, sc1, ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk3, (dc2 on 1ch) x 3 + RC5
Step 5
Front part
After you work the 51 chs following the 10th row of the 1st front shoulder piece, crochet the 10th row of the second front shoulder piece as written above. That way you will join the two shoulder pieces together to continue crocheting the front part.
Then crochet 11th row similar to the 1st row. When working the 11th row above the 10th row, work right and left Vsts into Vsts. When crocheting the row above 51 chs (chains between the 2 shoulder pieces), work Vst. on 1ch as the 1st row requires.
Repeat the pattern starting from the 2nd row working 4 repeats until you crochet 20 rows in total.
Step 6
Back part
Make a foundation chain of 111 chains or multiples of 26 chains plus 7 additional chs and work 19 rows of the pineapple st. pattern.
1 – 9 rows of the back part = 1 – 9 rows of a shoulder part
10th row - h4ch, dc2 on 1ch, [(dc2 on 1ch) x 2, ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk5, sc1, ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk3, (dc2 on 1ch) x 2, dc3 on 1ch] x 3; (dc2 on 1ch) x 2, ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk5, sc1, ch2, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk3, (dc2 on 1ch) x 3 + RC5
11th row – h6ch, [(sc1, ch3, sk1) x 2, sc1, ch2, sk4, Vst. into Vst., sk3, Vst. on 1ch, sk3, Vst. into Vst, ch2, sk4, (sc1, ch3, sk1)x2] x 4, sc1 + RC4
12 - 19 rows of the back part = 12 – 19 rows of the front part
Step 7
Join front and back parts together
After you join the front and back parts together from one side, continue the 20th row regular way to end and then connect the parts from the other side as well. Lastly, work one slip stitch.
To continue crocheting in the round, work slip stitches to the next Vst. or cut the yarn, secure it, and then attach it near the Vst.
Step 8
Crochet in the round
1st round – ch3, dc1 into Vst., [Vst. on 1ch, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk4, (sc1, ch3, sk1) x 4, sc1, ch2, sk4, Vst. into Vst.] to end; Vst. on 1ch, Vst. into Vst., ch2, sk4, (sc1, ch3, sk1) x 4, sc1, ch2 + sl.st.1 into op.
2nd round – ch3, dc1 into op., [(ch1, Vst. into Vst) x 2, ch2, sk5, (sc1, ch3, sk3) x 3, sc1, ch2, Vst. into Vst.] to end; (ch1, Vst. into Vst.) x 2, ch2, sk5, (sc1, ch3, sk3) x 3, sc1, ch2 + sl.st. in op.

Step 9
Adjust your gauge/tension using different sizes crochet hooks
Repeat the 10 rounds starting from the 1st round twice using the same crochet hook (3.25mm).
Use a smaller size crochet hook (2.75mm) in order not to decrease chains.
Following 10 rounds (one pineapple) work with 3rd (largest) crochet hook (3.50mm).
Step 10
Increase
Work the 10 increase rounds similar to the regular 10 rounds, but begin each round with ch2 and right and left Vsts work dc2,ch1 dc2 or go round by round.
Crochet in the round (increase chains)
1st round – ch2, (dc1, ch1, dc2) in sm.op., [Vst. on 1ch, V*st. into Vst., ch2, sk4, (sc1, ch3, sk1) x 4, sc1, ch2, sk4, V*st. into Vst.] to end; Vst. on 1ch, V*st. into Vst., ch2, sk4, (sc1, ch3, sk1) x 4, sc1, ch2 + sl.st.1 into op.

Repeat the above 10 rounds until you crochet the desired length of the dress.
Step 11
Sleeves
Joint front and back shoulder pieces together. Work 3 chains and begin crocheting the pineapple pattern in the round starting from the 2nd regular round. Make about even intervals between each Vst and sc sts. For each sleeve, work 3 repeats/pineapples. The 3rd and all other rounds work regular way without making any adjustments to the pattern until you reach the desired length of sleeves.
Step 12
Neck edges – sc to end.

Comments

Hi ArdenaH,

Hi ArdenaH,
I'm very glad that you chose to try this pattern. Happy crochet!

Is there a way to make this

Is there a way to make this pattern open in the front? I'm assuming the pattern would have to not be done in the round but I'm curious to know when in the pattern it nwould need to stop in order for the piece to be straight in the middle.

Elyse Jewell

Hi Elyse Jewell,

Hi Elyse Jewell,
If I would want to make the dress to be open in the front, I would adjust the pattern starting from the 10th row. I wouldn't work 51 returning chains, but made as many chs as necessary to work one more pineapple. For the second front part, I would make a foundation chain first and then continue working the 10th row (second shoulder piece). Again the exact number of chs will depend on the number of repeats/pineapples you plan to work. In my case, I would work 2 repeats for each front part. After I join the front and back parts together, I would work regular rows until I crochet the desired length of the garment. Happy crocheting!

For Lydia Chai,

For Lydia Chai,
It is easier for me to answer comments right after the written instruction. In the written instruction, I've explained steps how I crocheted the dress. I used 51 chs to work 2 extra pineapples/repeats because that was the pattern requirement. If I made 52 chs, I would have one extra chain that I don't need. I know that you plan to work more repeats, but you may try to crochet the 10th and 11th rows as I did to understand why I needed 51 chs instead of 52. It is just 2 rows anyway, it won't take long. If you need to crochet 3 repeats, then I would suggest working 77 chs or (26 x 3) - 1 = 77. I do not have the pattern for a V-neck pineapple stitch dress. Please ask questions (if any) on this page. Happy crocheting!

So it's ok to do. 3

So it's ok to do. 3 pineapples instead of four? Like urs u do two - previously I x understand the calculation cuz of the - 1 now I understand already - pls do more videos on garments. Love ur tutorial

Hi sjudovits,

Hi sjudovits,
For the size US 12, I would work 10 repeats. For that, after 10th row (step 2), chain 77 instead of 51, and for the back part (step 6) make a foundation chain of 137 chs intead of 111 chs. Happy crochet!
