Crochet boy's vest
Step-by-step crochet instructions:
Step 1
For the ribbing, make a foundation chain of 9 chain stitches plus 1 returning chain (RC).
1st row - single crochet (SC) to end plus 1 RC.
2nd row - back loop single crochet (BLSC) to end plus 1 RC.
3 - 55 rows = 2nd row.
56th row - BLSC to end.
Step2
Connect two ends of the ribbing together to begin crocheting in round.
Step 3
Attach the different color yarn from the wrong side near the ribbing seam or your starting point. Leave the brown yarn for now to work with it later. Continue crocheting in round using different yarn for 3 rounds.
1st round - single crochet to end (you should create 84 chain stitches).
2nd round - [BLSC 1, FLSC 1] to end.
3rd round = 2nd round.
Step 4
Change the yarn to brown again.
4th - 6th rounds - [BLSC 1, FLSC 1] to end.
Continue alternating yarns every 3 rounds until you crochet 24 rounds from the ribbing.
Step 5
Work the back piece
(your 1st row will be on 25th round)
1st row (right side) - [BLSC 1, FLSC 1] for 36 chain stitches plus 1 RC.
2nd row - [RBLSC 1*, RFLSC 1] to end plus 1 RC.
3, 5, 7 and 9 rows = 1st row.
4, 6, 8, and 10 rows = 2nd row.
*RBLSC - work as a regular back loop single crochet, but insert the crochet hook from the opposite (back) side to match the pattern that is on the other side of your work. For example, if you are crocheting on the wrong side, insert the hook from your right side in a stitch, grab the yarn, and pull it through to create a second loop on your hook. After that do yarn over and pull it through both loops lying on the hook.
Note that your wrong side is where your ribbing seam is.
Step 6
Back right shoulder piece
11th row (right side) - [BLSC 1, FLSC 1] for 14 chain stitches plus 1RC.
12th row - [RBLSC 1, RFLSC 1] to end plus 1 RC.
13th row - [BLSC 1, FLSC 1] to end plus 1 RC.
Step 7
Back left shoulder piece
Work single crochet from the 13th row down to 10th row the same way as you would do an edge.
Continue [BLSC 1, FLSC 1] to end of 11th row plus 1 RC.
12th row (wrong side) - [RBLSC 1, RFLSC 1] for 14 chain stitches plus 1 RC.
13th row - [BLSC 1, FLSC 1] to end.
Cut the yarn and secure it.
Step 8
Front left piece (its 1st row will be on 25th round).
Skip 6 chain stitches from the back piece and attach the yarn.
1st row (right side) - [BLSC 1, FLSC 1] for 18 chain stitches.
2nd row - [RBLSC 1, RFLSC 1] to end plus 1 RC.
3rd row - [BLSC 1, FLSC 1] to end.
4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 rows = 2nd row.
5, 7, 9, and 11 = 3rd row.
13th row - [BLSC 1, FLSC 1] to end plus 1 chain st.
Step 9
Connect front and back shoulder pieces from the wrong side of your work. That way the seam won’t be visible.
Step 10
Front right piece (its 1st row will be on 25th round)
Skip 6 chain stitches from other side of the back piece and attach the yarn.
1st row (wrong side) - [RBLSC 1, RFLSC 1] for 18 chain stitches.
2nd row - [BLSC 1, FLSC 1] to end plus 1 RC.
3rd row - [RBLSC 1, RFLSC 1] to end.
4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 rows = 2nd row.
5, 7, 9, and 11 = 3rd row.
13th row - [RBLSC 1, RFLSC 1] to end plus 1 chain st.
Step 11 = Step 9
Step 12
Edges
Work single crochet with the brown yarn to crochet edges for both arms and neck.

Hi. I want to make this vest
Hi. I want to make this vest for a newborn. What will be the stitch breakdown for that? How many stitches should be in the first round (where u have 84 stitches). And how many stitches should be used for the black panel, etc.

Hi Amna,
Hi Amna,
For the newborn, I would pick up about 72 chains instead of 84 chs. For the back part, I would use half of the chains or 36 chs, assuming that your gauge will be the same as mine. The other way to adjust the pattern to a smaller size is to use a smaller size crochet hook and finer yarn. Happy crochet!
