Crochet dress
Step-by-step crochet instructions
Step 1
Make a foundation chain of 121 chain stitches (multiples of 8 sts plus 1 stitch).
Step 2
1st round – [skip 3 chains from the hook, hdc 4* in 4th chain, make 3 chains, hdc 4 in the same 4th chain, skip 3, hdc 1] repeat that to end
*hdc – usual half double crochet. Do yarn over, insert the hook into a stitch, and pull the yarn through the stitch making 3 stitches on your hook. Then yarn over again and pull it through those 3 sts.
Attach the main color yarn.
2nd round – hdc 4 in the chain of 3 sts (arch between two sets of hdc 4), make 3 chains, hdc 4 in the same chain, skip 3 sts, unusual hdc 1*] repeat that to end
*unusual hdc – Yarn over and pull the yarn through one stitch making 3 stitches on your crochet hook. Then insert the hook into the following chain, grab the yarn, and pull it through putting 4th stitch on your hook. After that do yarn over and pull the yarn through first 2 stitches then yarn over again and pull it through the 3 remaining stitches on the hook.
Crochet following rounds as 2nd one alternating colors of yarn for about 7 rounds or until you reach the desired length of the pattern.
Step 3
Cut the first yarn and secure it. Work slip stitch with the main color towards your starting point. Continue working single crochet in each stitch of the foundation chain for 1 round.
2 – 30 rounds – front loop single crochet (flsc) to end.
If you want the dress to be longer, work flsc for more rounds.
Step 4
1st decrease
31st round – [dec 1**, flsc 10] to last 1 st., flsc 1
**dec - decrease. To make one decrease, you need to insert the crochet hook into the second st. from your hook, grab the yarn, and pull it through. After that you should have 2 sts on the hook. Further, pull the yarn through the following chain putting the 3rd st. on the hook. Do yarn over and pull the yarn through the 3 sts.
After the decrease you should have 10 chain stitches less.
Step 5
32 – 37 rounds – flsc to end
Step 6
2nd decrease
38rd round - [dec 1, flsc 9] to last 1 st., flsc 1
After the decrease you should have 101 stitches left.
Step 7
Attach the first yarn and continue back loop single crochet (blsc) for about 6 rounds. (If not desired, you may ignore this step and continue crocheting with the main color.)
Continue flsc with main color for 14 rounds.
Step 8
Increase of stitches
59th round – [inc 1***, flsc 10] to end
***inc - increase
After the increase, you should have 9 stitches more.
Step 9
60 – 70 rounds – flsc to end
Step 10
Back piece
1st row (on 71st round) – flsc 8 (for underarm) and flsc 48 (for the back piece) plus 1 returning chain (rc)
2nd row (wrong side) – blsc 48 plus rc 1 (work from the right side of the piece)
3rd row (right side) – flsc 48 and rc 1
4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 rows = 2nd row
5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 rows = 3 rd row
Step 11
Back shoulder piece
17 and 19 rows (right side) – flsc 10 plus rc 1
18 and 20 rows (wrong side) – blsc 10 (backwards) and rc 1
21st row – flsc 10, rc 1, and work slip stitch down to 16th row. Continue flsc to end of the 17th row plus 1 rc.
Step 12
Second back shoulder piece
Work 18 – 21 rows as you crocheted for the first shoulder piece. At the end of 21st row, work slip stitch down to the 71st round
Step 13
Continue 71st round, work flsc 8 for the second underarm.
Step 14
Front piece
1st row (right side) – flsc 46 plus 1 rc
2nd row (wrong side) – blsc 46 plus rc 1 (work from the right side of the piece)
3 and 5 rows = 1st row
4 and 6 rows = 2nd row
Step 15
Front shoulder piece
7th row – flsc 10 plus rc 1
8th row – blsc (backwards) 10 and rc 1
9, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 19 rows = 7th row
10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 rows = 8th row
Connect back and front shoulder pieces together working 21st row. If you do not want the seam to be visible, flip the both shoulder pieces on the wrong side. After you finish connecting the pieces together, work slip stitch down to the 6th row. Crochet the 7th row to end plus 1 rc.
Step 16
Second front shoulder piece
Work 8 – 21 rows as you crocheted for the first front shoulder piece.
Step 17
Sleeve
1st round – work sc to pick up about 50 chains
2nd round – flsc to end
3rd round – flsc 24, dec 1, flsc to end
After that you should have 1 st. less.
Repeat that process decreasing 1 chain every 3 rounds for about 21 rounds or until you reach the desired length of the sleeve.
Step 18
Sleeve edge
Attach the first yarn and work blsc for 1 or more rounds. Cut the yarn and secure it.
Step 19
Repeat steps 17 and 18 for the other sleeve.
Step 20
Neckline edge
Crochet with the first color 1 or more rounds, then cut the yarn and secure it.

How would I make if I wear a size 10 dress

Hi Elizabeth,
Hi Elizabeth,
For the size US 10, I would advise to start with 129 chain stitches or (8 x 16) + 1, assuming you'll have the same gauge as I had. Happy crocheting!

Hi Nana,
Hi Nana,
The number of chains to start with depends a lot on your gauge. I would advise you to make a sample and count the chains accordingly to her hip circumference, keeping in mind that for the bottom pattern, you need multiples of 8 chs plus 1 additional ch. If you give me more info, I'll try to help you out. Happy crochet!

Hi interunet, how many chains should I start for the dress in size five?
Sana replied on Permalink
Hi Pamle,
Hi Pamle,
For the size US 5, you may also use the same number of chains I used (if you'll have the same gauge/tension as I had). The only difference will be that your dress should be a little bit longer on you than on me. Happy crocheting!
