Mittens crochet pattern - easy for beginners stitch
Step-by-step crochet instructions
Left mitten
Step 1
Cuff ribbing
Make a foundation chain of 16 chain stitches.
1st row – h2ch, sc 14 plus RC1
2nd row – h2ch, blsc 14 + RC1
3 – 23 rows = 2nd row
24th row (last row) – h2ch, blsc to end
Step 2
Join the last row of the cuff ribbing with the first one. Flip the garment to the wrong side in order to hide the seam. Now the wrong side will be your right side.
Step 3
Pick up on the cuff of the ribbing 30 chains.
1st round – [(sc1 above one rib.row) x 3, sc2 above 1 rib.row] to end
You should have 31 chain stitches in total.
Step 4
2nd round – flsc 15, blsc to last 1ch; sc2 on 1ch
3rd round – blsc to last 1ch; sc2 on 1ch
4 and 6 rounds = 2nd round
5th round = 3rd round
Step 5
Thumb hole
7th round – blsc to last 9chs; ch2, sk8, sl.st.1
Step 6
8th round – flsc15, blsc to end
9th round – blsc to end
10, 12, 14, and 16 rounds = 8th round
11, 13, 15, and 17 rounds = 9th round
Step 7
Decrease
18th round – (flsc4, sk1) x 3, (blsc4, sk1) to end
19th round – [blsc 3, sk1] to end
20th round – (flsc2, sk1) x 3, (blsc2, sk1) to end
21st round = 19th round
Cut the yarn and secure it from inside of the mitten.
Step 8
Thumb
Attach the yarn between the 8 skipped chs and the 2 top chs, make the 1st chain, and pick up one additional chain in order not to develop a hole. Work blsc8 on the existing chains, pick up one chain again, and continue blsc2 on the 2 top chains. You should have 13 chains in total including the chain that is on your hook.
Work blsc to end for 5 more rounds or more. Then decrease one chain every other chain. Cut the yarn and secure it from inside of the thumb.
Right mitten
Repeat steps 1, 2, and 3.
Step 4
2nd round – flsc 15, sc2 on 1ch, blsc to end
3rd round – blsc15, sc2 on 1ch, blsc to end
4 and 6 rounds = 2nd round
5th round = 3rd round
Step 5
Thumb hole
7th round – blsc16, ch2, sk8, sl.st.1, blsc to end
Repeat steps 6, 7, and 8
