Step-by-step crochet instructions
Step 1
Make a foundation chain of 104 chain stitches plus 1 additional chain or multiples of 8 chains (8 x 13 columns).
1st round – single crochet (sc) to end
2 – 5 rounds – front loop sc to end
If you want the top to be more flowy, increase the total number of chains by 8, 16, 24 or more chains as desired before working the columns.
Step 2
1st column – 7 fans
1st fan (work 8 chains) – sc2, bump 1st*, sc2, bump 2nd, sc1, ch.6. You should use up 5 out of 8 chains. Turn your crochet piece clockwise and work slip stitch (sl.st.)1 between 1st and 2nd bumps. After that you should have an ark from the 6 chains above the 2nd bump. Turn your work back to the right side and work sc6 in each chain of the ark, at the end ch.1 and sl.st.1 to go on a lower level.
In the last 3 chains out of 8, work sc 2, bump 3rd, sc1 and returning chain (rc)1. Turn your work to the wrong side and insert your hook into the 2nd chain on the ark, [dc2, ch.2] 3 times. You should have 1 chain left, dc2 in one chain, ch.1 and insert the hook into the very 1st of 8 chs or after the 1st bump and work sc1.
*bump – ch.2 and sc1 on the 1st of those 2 chains
Step 3
2nd fan – on the arc of the 1st fan you should have 16 chains (do not count the stitch that is on your hook). Work sl.st. 4 in the 1st 4 chs from the bottom of the fan, repeat the pattern in the following 8 chains, and you should have 4 chains left on the other side of the ark. Do not work those last 4 chains.
3 – 7 fans = 2nd fan. Work last 3 fans in the column using a larger size hook in order to widen the garment without the need to increase chains.
Leave the column for the moment; you will work with it later.
Step 4
2nd column
Attach the yarn and work other 8 chains for the 2nd column totally the same as you croched the 1st one.
After you crochet 7 fans of the column, join 1st and 2nd columns together using the yarn of the 2nd column. Then work sl.st. 8 to other (left) side of the 2nd column and crochet the 3rd column. Connect the 3rd column of 7 fans with the 2nd one.
Step 5
Keep crocheting columns of fans joining them together from the right side and working sl.st. to the left to begin new columns.
Step 6
Join the very last and 1st columns using the yarn of the 1st column. Work sl.st. to the initial foundation chain.
Step 7
1st round – sc to end (use a larger hook)
2 – 15 rounds – flsc to end
Step 8
1st front piece (triangle)
Divide the total number of chains by 4. So, 104 / 4 = 26 chains.
1st row (right side) – flsc for 26 chain and turn your work
2nd row (wrong side) – back loop sc backwards to last 2 chs, dec.1** and turn your crochet piece
**dec – decrease, insert the hook into a chain and pull the yarn through. You should have 2 stitches on your hook. Then insert the hook into the following chain and pull the yarn through again adding 1 more stitch on your hook. Do yarn over and pull the yarn through the 3 stitches.
3rd row – flsc to last 2 chains, dec1
Alternate 2nd and 3rd rows until you have 3 chains left.
Step 9
Strap - Braid
Make 61 chains and work sl.st. back to the last 3 chains of the 1st front piece. Use the 2nd base chain of the last 3 and create 61 chs second time working back sl.st. From the 3rd base chain, work 61 chains third time and come back with sl.st. last time. Braid the 3 straps together and join it to the back part.
Step 10
Repeat steps 8 and 9 for the 2nd front piece.
Step 11
Edges - *sc1, dc3, sc1 in one chain, skip 2. Repeat from *.
