Women’s lace vest jacket crochet pattern - ear of wheat stitch
Step-by-step crochet instructions
Step 1
Make a foundation chain of 158 chain stitches or any other even number of chains plus 4 additional chs. Do not work it tightly.
Step 2
First half of the vest - back part
1st row – h4ch, dc to end plus RC3
You should work 159 dc, including the initial 3 skipped chs (count the 3 chs as your 1st dc)
2nd row – h4ch, [dc1, ch1, sk1] to last 2 chs; dc2 + RC3
3rd row – h4ch, dc1, [ch1, sk1, dc1 under ch.], dc1 in the very last ch. + RC3
4th row = 1st row
Repeat the 4 rows
Step 3
Armhole point
I repeated the 4 rows 8 times. So, 4 x 8 = 32 rows. The 33rd row = 1st row.
Work the 34th row like 2nd row, but crochet to last 50 chs. Make RC3 and turn. You should have 109 dc, including the 3 initial chs of the row.
35th row = 3rd row
Step 4
Front/shoulder part
36th row – h4ch, dc to end, ch53 (you should have the same number of chains for the front part as for the back one)
37, 40, 41, 44, 45, 48, and 49 = 1st row
38, 42, 46, and 50 = 2nd row
39, 43, 47, and 51 = 3rd row
Step 5
Front part with collar
52nd row - h4ch, dc to end then fold the front part with the back one and continue working dc on the first half of the back part towards the initial foundation chain. You should pick up dc29 on the edge of the 1st half of the back piece plus RC3.
Repeat the 4 rows four more times increasing a couple or more chains from the collar side of the garment as necessary. That way the collar will look nicer once bent.
4 x 8 = 16 rows and 52 rows + 16 rows = 68 rows
69th row = 1st row
Step 6
Second half of the vest
The second half of the vest work like the first one.
70th row (2nd half of the vest) = 1st row
Step 7
Button holes
70th row (1st half of the vest) – h4ch, [dc20, sc1, ch3, sk3, sc1] x 4, dc to end
Join the 1st and 2nd halves of the vest together.
Step 8
Join shoulder pieces together.
For the armhole edges, work sc to end
Step 9
Front borders
Attach the yarn from the bottom of the fabric and work two more rows of dc increasing a few chains from the back of the collar side and working the rows all the way around to other bottom of the 2nd from piece. Work RC3 and continue dc back to the starting point again.
Cut the yarn and secure it.

Hi saip,

Hi saip,
The more you chain, the longer your vest will be in length. Work the pattern until you crochet about half of the back part or from the middle of the back part to an armhole. After that continue working the pattern, but work shorter rows to shape the armhole. Then it will be necessary to increase chains to work long rows again the same length as your rows before the armhole point. Happy crochet!

Hi Sana,

Hi Sana,
Hope you are doing good. I must say your work is awesome. I have been following your videos. I did complete one cardigan as per the instructions provided by you. But it turned out to be a bit small for me :-(.

I plan to crochet this vest that you have shared. Can you please tell me if this yarn is fine for this vest? http://www.pradhanembroiderystores.com/product/shade-no-381/589

Also, I have a 2mm hook. I am not sure of how many stitches I should make with a 2 mm hook. Can you please guide me on how to start and at which steps/rows I should be careful? How do I make sure that it fits me?

Thanks

Hi Prasanna,

Hi Prasanna,
You may choose any yarn you like for the pattern. Your gauge will play the biggest role whether the cardigan will fit you or not. To save time, I always suggest to check the gauge before starting any project. For that, crochet a small sample of the pattern, and then estimate how many rows you need to work to your chest circumference accordingly. Happy crochet!

Hi Sana,

Hi Sana,
I have completed the first half of the vest.I am trying to start the second half without cutting the thread, so that I make one piece vest and do not need to join the two parts in the end. But every time I start the second half from the foundation chain, my wheat ears form in the opposite direction from the first half. My 69 row ends on the bottom side, do I slip stitch all the way back the 69 row up to the foundation chain? That way I am getting the wheat ears in correct direction but the row 1&4 become opposite of first part....plz help

Hi saip,

Hi saip,
You do not have to match the 1st and 4th rows, it won't be visible. Make sure that your 1st row goes up to the neck and not to the bottom of the vest. The most important part to work the second part totally the same as the first one. The wrong side of the second part should be your right one. If you do not do it that way, it won't be possible to work armholes correctly. Happy crochet!

Sorry Sana but I am

Sorry Sana but I am completely confused. Can you tell me when I start the second half from foundation chain, the tail of the foundation chain should be on my left side or on right side?

Hi saip,

Hi saip,
I'm sorry for confusing you. I should've checked the pattern before writing you the post. After I watched the video again and read the step 3, I recalled that I repeated the 4 rows 8 times and then I crocheted one more long row which equal the 1st row of the pattern. So, my 1st row actually is long (not short) and goes down to the bottom of the vest and not up to the neck as I wrote you. I apologize for the confusion. Please watch the video from about 9:24 to see that my tail of the yarn is from the left bottom corner.

Hi Sana,
