Step-by-step crochet instructions
Step 1
Make a foundation chain of 107 chain stitches (ch. sts) or multiples of 12 chains plus 11 ch. sts. Join last and first chains together with slip stitch (sl.st.). Begin to crochet in round.
Step 2
Main part
Diamond pattern
1st round – hdc 6, [ch.2, sk.2, hdc1, ch.2, sk.2, hdc7] to last 4 chains; ch.2, sk.2, hdc1, ch.2, and sk.1
hdc – half double crochet
sk – skip
2nd round – sk1, [hdc5, ch2, sk2, hdc3, ch.2, sk.2] to last 10 chains; hdc5, ch.2, sk.2, and hdc3
3rd round – ch.2, sk.2, [hdc3, ch2, sk2, hdc5, ch.2, sk.2] to last 9 chains; hdc3, ch.2, sk.2, and hdc4
4th round – hdc1, ch.2, sk.2, [hdc1, ch2, sk2, hdc7, ch.2, sk.2] to last 8 chains; hdc1, ch.2, sk.2, and hdc5
5th round – ch.2, sk.2, [hdc3, ch2, sk2, hdc5, ch.2, sk.2] to last 9 chains; hdc3, ch.2, sk.2, and hdc3, ch.2, and sk.1
6th round – sk.1, [hdc5, ch2, sk2, hdc3, ch.2, sk.2] to last 10 chains; hdc5, ch.2, sk.2, hdc1, ch.2, and sk.2
Step 3
Continue the pattern
Following 6 rounds will be slightly different from the 1st 6 rounds.
7th round – [hdc7, ch2, sk2, hdc1, ch.2, sk.2] to last 11 chains; hdc5, ch.2, sk.2, hdc3, ch.2, and sk.1
8th round – sk.1, [hdc5, ch2, sk2, hdc3, ch.2, sk.2] to last 10 chains; hdc3, ch.2, sk.2, and hdc5
9th round – ch.2, sk.2, [hdc3, ch2, sk2, hdc5, ch.2, sk.2] to last 9 chains; hdc1, ch.2, sk.2, and hdc6
10th round – hdc1, ch.2, sk.2, [hdc1, ch2, sk2, hdc7, ch.2, sk.2] to last 20 chains; hdc1, ch.2, sk.2, hdc5, ch.2, sk.2, hdc3, ch.2, sk.2, and hdc5
11th round – ch.2, sk.2, [hdc3, ch2, sk2, hdc5, ch.2, sk.2] to last 21 chains; hdc3, ch.2, sk.2, hdc3, ch.2, sk.2, hdc5, ch.2, sk.2, hdc3, ch.2, and sk.1
12th round – sk.1, [hdc5, ch2, sk2, hdc3, ch.2, sk.2] to last 22 chains; hdc5, ch.2, sk.2, hdc1, ch.2, sk.2, hdc7, ch.2, sk.2, hdc1, ch.2, and sk.2
Continue shaping diamonds (rhombuses) making 2 chains between them. Every 3 rounds you need to make one adjustment to continue the pattern correctly. Because of that, you should have one diamond different than all the others every 6 rounds. As pattern goes, those smaller rhombuses will be shifted to the right.
Important! Crochet the middle of the main part (several rounds after the foundation chain and about the same number of rounds before the armholes) with smaller size hook in order not to decrease and increase chains.
Crochet the main part before arms for about 35 rounds or until you reach the desired length of the garment.
Step 4
Back part
Work the pattern for 48 chains plus 1 returning chain (rc) for 14 rows. Regardless of the pattern requirements, work at least 1 hdc at the end of each row + 1rc.
To know how to proceed the pattern, look on the following diamond to figure out how many chains to leave for the next rhombus. For example, you know that above hdc1 of the previous row goes hdc3 and between each diamond should be 2 chains (exceptions at the very end of each row).
Step 5
Back shoulder piece
Continue the patter for 14 chains + 1rc for 3 rows. Work slip stitch down to the 14th row and finish the 15th row.
Work the other shoulder part for 14 ch. + 1rc for 2 rows.
Step 6
Front part
Skip 6 chains from both sides of the back part and continue the pattern for 9 rows, working 47 chains + 1rc.
Step 7
Front shoulder piece
Continue the pattern for 14 chains for 7 rows. Work slip stitch down to 9th row and finish the 10th row. Crochet the other front piece then join front and back shoulder pieces together. Do not flip the fabric to the other side before joining shoulder pieces.
Note that the pattern looks better on the wrong side. So once you finish the sweater, it will be necessary to flip the garment to the wrong side, and it will become your right side.
Step 8
Sleeves
Make a foundation chain of 47 ch.sts and work the diamond pattern with smaller crochet hook first and finish it with larger size hook. It is necessary to do in order not to increase chains. When you crochet the desired length, join the sleeves to the sweater.
Step 9
For all edges
*single crochet (sc) 2, ch.2, and sl.st.1 in the same base chain that is second sc. Repeat from * to end of each round.

Hi catlady,

Hi catlady,
The pattern requirement is multiples of 12 chains plus 11 additional chains. To crochet a bigger size, you need to add one or more repeats/diamonds for each front and back parts depending on your gauge and preferences how it should fit. For example, if you add just one repeat for each front and back parts: (10 repeats x 12 chs) + 11 chs = 131 chs will be necessary to work for the initial foundation chain. If you believe that 10 repeats + 11 chs will be too wide on you, then you may adjust your gauge by using a smaller size crochet hook or thinner yarn. For the back part, work 60 chs + RC1, skip 6 chs under each arm, and use remaining 59 chs + RC1 for the front part. Happy crochet!
