Step-by-step crochet instructions
Step 1
Make a foundation chain of 105 chains or multiples of 10 chains plus 5 additional chains. I count all the chains including the loop on the hook.
Step 2
Increase
Add 10 chains
1st row – [sc9, ch1] to last 13 chs; sc13 plus RC3
2nd row – h4ch, [dc2 on 1ch, ch1, (dc1, ch1, dc1) on 1ch, ch1, dc2 on 1ch, ch1, sk1, (sc1, ch1, sk1) x 3] to last 3 chs; dc2 on 1ch, ch1, (dc1, ch1, dc1) on 1ch, dc2 on 1ch + RC3
3rd row – h4ch, [dc2 on 1ch, ch2, sk3, tr6 on 1ch, ch2, sk3, dc2 on 1ch, ch2, sk2, sc1, ch3, sk1, sc1, ch2] to last 9 chs; dc2 on 1ch, ch2, sk3, tr6 on 1ch, ch2, sk3, dc2 on 1ch + RC3
Step 3
Pineapple pattern increasing chains
4th row – h4ch, [dc2 on 1ch, ch2, sk3, (dc2 on 1ch) x 5, dc1, ch2, sk3, dc2 on 1ch, ch2, sk4, sc1, ch2, sk4] to last 14 chs; dc2 on 1ch, ch2, sk3, (dc2 on 1ch) x 5, dc1, ch2, sk3, dc3 on 1ch + RC3

Repeat the pattern starting from 4th row until you crochet 21 rows then join the back and front parts together skipping shoulder parts.
Step 4
Join front and back parts
22nd row – work the pattern for 2 PAs, join 2nd with 6th PA, skipping 3 shoulder PAs. Continue the pattern the regular way for 5 PAs, the connect 10th with 14th PA, skipping 3 shoulder PAs again. Crochet the pattern for the remaining 2 PAs as usual.
Continue the pattern increasing chains for two more rows.
23rd row = 8th row

Repeat the pattern starting from the 1st round
Step 7
Edges, buttons, and buttonholes
Work sc for all the edges.
Sew buttons making 7 rows intervals between each button or as desired.
Work 9** chains for each buttonhole making 7 rows intervals between each buttonhole as well.
** the number might vary depending on the size of the chosen buttons.
Planning point.
If it is necessary to adjust the crochet project to a different size, plan ahead how many pineapples you need to work to make the width accordingly to your chest circumference.

I love this sweater but I don

I love this sweater but I don't know what size is this and I like to know if I make ex-large size then how much
Yarn I need to buy. Thank you.

Hi Gopa,

Hi Gopa,
At the top of the page, you may read that this sweater is for the size US6. The number of ball you need for the project depends on many factors, such as your gauge, thickness of the yarn, and the crochet hook. I always advise to get more yarn in order not to run short. For the XL size, I would suggest to buy about 7 yarn balls. Happy crocheting!

Hi Sana - I'm looking to make

Hi Sana - I'm looking to make this my next project once I complete the Pineapple Stitch Sweater. Could you tell me how many stitches in one pineapple repeat pattern please?

Hi gwen4936,

Hi gwen4936,
Thanks for the good question. Initially the number of chains in one PA repeat is 10 chains. If you have the same gauge for this project as you had for your previous one, I would advise you to start with about 122 chains then increase 10 chains working sc12, ch1. After that it's necessary to increase another 10 chs working sc13, ch1 to work 14 repeats in total. If desired, you may work more gradual increase of the chains. Then just follow the pattern. You should add 4 PAs more to have 18 PAs in total. You need 3 PAs for each front and shoulder parts and 6 PAs for the back part. Happy crocheting!

Hi Anu sachdeva,

Hi Anu sachdeva,
Thank you for noticing the typo and uploading the picture. I already corrected the ending of 25th row. Please let me know if it works for you now. Thank you.

To Sana

To Sana
Please can you tell me how many chains I would need to crochet the pineapple stitch cardigan for a US size 14, as this is a US size 6.

Hi SSeaman18,

Hi SSeaman18,
Thanks for the good question. The number of chains to start the project with depends on your gauge/tension. To crochet the size 14, you may work the same number of chains as I did, but adjust your gauge using a larger size crochet hook or/and thicker yarn. The other option is to work more chains (please read my post to gwen4936), but it is necessary to crochet more tightly or choose a smaller size hook and thinner yarn. So, you will crochet 12 pineapples for the body instead of 10 pineapples (my case). When you add pineapples, the number of them should be even. Otherwise, it won't be possible to split them to a back, front, and 2 shoulder parts later on. Happy crochet!

Hi Sana you said I should

Hi Sana you said I should start with 122chs but 12 pineapples is 120 chs + 4 chs so I need to start with 124 chs I am right.

I am having trouble when I

I am having trouble when I finish row 28 and start back across on row 29 there are too many stitches and I'm not sure what I am doing wrong can you help me? In the pictures I started back across for row 29.Do you have a video for how the pattern continues without increasing chains?
