Crochet a ladies’ vest - red shell pattern
Step-by-step crochet instructions
Step 1
Make a foundation chain of 141 chain stitches or multiples of 10 chains plus 1 chain. Join the 1st and last chains of the foundation chain with slip stitch (sl.st.) and work 1 chain (ch.).
1st round – double crochet (dc) to end plus sl.st. 1*
*insert the hook into the second chain of the 2nd round and work sl.st.1. It is necessary to skip one chain because you made extra chain at the beginning of the 1st round to pick up the height of the round.
Step 2
2nd round - *skip 4, (dc3, ch.1, dc1) on one chain. Repeat from * to end
3rd round – *insert the hook between dc3 and dc1 of the previous round, (dc3, ch.1, dc1) on one chain. Repeat from * to end
4 – 11 rounds = 3rd round
12 – 21 rounds = 3rd round, but work the pattern with smaller hook in order not to decrease or increase chains.
22 – 31 rounds = 3rd round, and work the stitch with larger hook again
If desired, you may work more rounds before the armholes point.
Step 3
Back part
Use the smaller hook and work the pattern for half of your total number of chains or columns of shells.
1st row – *skip4, (dc3, ch.1, dc1) on 1 ch. Repeat from * for 14 shells then skip 1, dc1 + 1 Returning Chain (RC).
2nd row – * insert the hook between dc1 and dc3 of the previous round, (dc1, ch.1, dc3) on one chain. Repeat from * to end. On the very last chain, dc1 +1RC
3, 5, 7, 9 & 11 rows = 1st row
4, 6, 8 & 10 rows = 2nd row
Step 4
Back shoulder pieces
For each back shoulder piece, work the pattern for 3 shells or 15 chains for 1 row
Step 5
Front part
Work right and wrong sides for 14 shells or 70 chains as for the back part, but crochet just 9 rows instead of 11.
1, 3, 5, 7, & 9 rows = 1st row
2, 4, 6, & 8 rows = 2nd row
Step 6
Front shoulder pieces
For each front shoulder piece, work the pattern for 3 shells or 15 chains for 3 rows working dc1 on the very last chain of each row +1RC
Step 7
Join front and back shoulder pieces together. Flip the garment to the wrong side, and it will be now your right side. It is optional, but the pattern looks better on the wrong side.
Step 8
Edges
For all edges work single crochet to end.

Hi Sana, I'll try to crochet

Hi Sana, I'll try to crochet this, I don't have a fine wire. How many foundation chains for my size? Pls. advise. I have #3 yarn. Thanks.

Hi Luz,

Hi Luz,
I would advise you to practice your gauge first. Make a foundation chain of about 18 chs (multiples of 5 chs + 3 additional chs) to work 3 repeats. Then crochet the 2 rows of the pattern (step 3). Once I know your gauge, I'll be able to give you my estimated number of chains to start with. Happy crochet!

Hi Sana, I did 18 chains and

Hi Sana, I did 18 chains and work 3 repeats, why I have the extra 3 chains, Do I have to skip them when I go to 3rd row. I'm confuse. Pls. advise. thanks.

Hi Luz,

Hi Luz,
It is necessary to work your 3rd row as your 1st one. You should finish the 2nd row with dc3 into 1ch, dc1 into the very last ch + RC1. So, you actually need to skip 4 chs at the beg. of the 3rd row. Happy crochet!

Hi Luz,

Hi Luz,
For your size I would make a foundation chain of about 161 chs to work 32 repeats (32 x 5) + 1. If you want the blouse to fit more loosely, add 2 repeats or 10 chs. Happy crochet!

Hi Sana,

Hi Sana,
I have to finish this, I started way back and I read my previous message when I asked you of how many chains do I have to do for my size, and I made a sample to find out my gauge and you told me to do 161 chains according to my gauge. I had 3 repeatsmeasure 4 inches. And now I'm on Step 2 and I measure my 4 repeats and measure 4 inches. Pls advise. Thanks.

Hi Luz,

Hi Luz,
If the garment fits good on your hips, you may skip more chs under each arm. That way your front and back parts won't be that wide. That is, if you do not plan to add sleeves to the blouse. Happy crochet!

Hi Sana, I'm so excited to

Hi Sana, I'm so excited to finish it, I'm lovin the stitch.I'm on the back part now. I'll just try if how many chains to skip under each arm yet. This time I will not add sleeves.I will let you know if I will have problem.

Hi Luz,

Hi Luz,
I'm glad that you like the pattern and finish the project soon. I'll be glad to see your work. Happy crochet!
