We picked up our 2016 Toyota Camry from a dealer with 7 miles on and a full tank of gas. After each of our first few trips computer showed 17 to 21 miles per gallon fuel economy. Kind of disappointment as the vehicle rated 25 mpg in the city. Before the first fill up odometer shows slightly over 300 miles and less than 30 miles left to the empty tank. We didn’t burn out all the fuel to complete stop, but still make a conclusion – the fuel economy of our new 2016 Toyota Camry is way lower than its “stated in the book”. Accounting 17 gallons fuel tank and based on winter driving in the city, occasionally with a heavy traffic, our car made about 19 miles per gallon on the very first tank of gas.
With flat terrain and 50% single driver, 50% with a passenger and a child in the car seat, there is no overload or heavy driving conditions for the vehicle. Due to multiples traffic lights and stop signs stop-and-go driving is typical in the city. There is only thing we can blame for such poor fuel economy – the low outside temperature. We drove the car with air temperature between 17 °F and 41 °F (-8 °C to +5 °C). Occasionally the engine was warmed up for 30 – 40 seconds before putting transmission into drive mode, but other then that there are no other excuses for such low performance.
